Butter Knives

A butter knife is the small, blunt-edged blade you reach for at the table, not the stove: it spreads butter, soft cheese, jam, pate and dips cleanly without tearing bread or toast.

This collection is a single, considered piece, the 5 inch butter knife from our Damascus Ji Series (X08), made to the same forged standard as our chef and santoku knives rather than the flimsy stamped spreader most sets throw in as an afterthought.

BUYING GUIDE

Choosing Butter Knives

What makes it different is that it is a real forged knife built for a gentle job. The blade is 67-layer Damascus cladding over a 12Cr18MoV stainless core, hardened to 58-62 HRC with a vacuum heat treatment, and set into a dense ebony wood handle. You do not sharpen a butter knife to a razor edge, so what matters here is corrosion resistance, comfortable balance, and a rounded, food-safe profile that glides over soft bread. The 12Cr18MoV core handles acidic spreads and daily washing without pitting, and the ebony handle gives it real weight and a premium feel matched to the rest of the Ji Series.

What is a butter knife actually for?

A butter knife is a spreading and portioning tool, not a cutting knife. Its job is to lift a pat of butter, spread it evenly to the edges of toast without ripping the crumb, and portion soft cheese or preserves cleanly. The edge is deliberately blunt and rounded so it is safe to hand to anyone at the table and safe to run across a wooden or ceramic board. If you need to actually slice a firm block of cheese or trim a rind, that is a different tool. For the sharp, cutting jobs at a cheese board, see our cheese knives instead.

Is a Damascus butter knife worth it?

It is if you want the table to match the kitchen and you value a piece that lasts. A stamped supermarket spreader is fine and cheap. This is a Ji Series blade with genuine 67-layer Damascus cladding, an ebony handle, and a lifetime warranty, made to sit alongside the rest of your Xinzuo knives rather than clash with them. It is a small luxury and an easy gift, but a proper forged knife underneath the pattern. The core is 12Cr18MoV steel and the knife is made in our own Yangjiang workshop in China. We are upfront about that rather than implying a Japanese origin.

How do you care for a Damascus butter knife?

Treat it like any of our forged knives: hand wash and dry it straight after use, and keep it out of the dishwasher, where heat and harsh detergent dull the Damascus finish and can loosen the ebony handle over time. Since a butter knife rarely needs sharpening, upkeep is really just washing, drying and the occasional wipe of food-safe mineral oil on the handle. Stored dry, it stays rust-free for years.

Common questions

Can you cut with a butter knife?

Only soft foods. A butter knife will part butter, soft cheese, a ripe brie or a slice of cake, but its blunt, rounded edge is not made to cut through firm cheese, bread crusts or anything that needs a true edge. For real cutting at the table, reach for a steak knife or the right blade for the job.

What steel is the Xinzuo butter knife made from?

The Ji Series butter knife uses a 12Cr18MoV stainless core clad in 67-layer Damascus steel, hardened to 58-62 HRC. It is the same core steel and layer count used across the wider Ji Series, so this butter knife matches the Ji chef, santoku and paring knives in look and finish.

Is it dishwasher safe?

No. Like all our Damascus knives, hand wash and dry it. The dishwasher dulls the pattern, risks corrosion and can damage the ebony handle. Hand washing takes seconds and keeps it looking new.

What warranty does it carry?

Every Xinzuo knife carries a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, you are covered by Australian Consumer Law, and Australian shipping is free on orders over $100.
