Each point bites the crust and the scallops between them slice the soft interior as you draw the blade back. Long strokes, almost no downward pressure. FAQs

Can I sharpen a serrated bread knife on a whetstone?

Not like a straight edge. The points and scallops can't be honed flat on a stone or run through a pull-through sharpener. A serrated edge holds for years; when it eventually dulls it needs a tapered rod worked into each scallop, or professional servicing. For most home cooks this knife will outlast many straight blades between sharpenings.

Why is the blade serrated instead of straight?

Serrations are what let a bread knife saw through hard crust without crushing the soft crumb underneath. The points bite the crust and the scallops slice the interior on the draw stroke, so you cut with almost no downward pressure. A straight edge would compress the loaf as it pushed through.

Is this real Damascus steel?

Yes. The blade is 67 layers of Damascus, 33 layers of 316/316L stainless folded each side of a 10Cr15CoMoV cutting core. The pattern is forged into the steel, not etched on.

How long is the blade really?

The verified blade length is 203mm, around 8.5". Total length with handle is 353mm, and it weighs 193g.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

No. Hand wash only. Dishwasher heat, detergent and knocking against other items will damage the edge and dry out the sycamore handle. Wash by hand and dry straight away.
