Can I sharpen a serrated bread knife on a whetstone?

Not like a straight edge. Each serration is a tiny scallop, so you can't draw the whole edge across a stone or hone it on a steel. Serrated blades hold their bite for a long time; when they finally dull, they need a tapered rod or sharpener that fits inside each groove, or a professional service.

Why serrations instead of a sharp straight edge?

Crust is hard and crumb is soft. A straight edge presses down and crushes the soft interior before the crust gives. Serrated teeth pierce the crust point-first on a draw stroke, so the loaf slices instead of squashing.

Is this blade Damascus?

No. The X02 bread knife is solid German 1.4116 (X50CrMoV15) stainless steel — not Damascus and not clad. It's chosen for corrosion resistance and a tough, low-maintenance edge.

How do I use it without tearing the bread?

Use long, light draw strokes and let the teeth do the cutting — don't press down. The 8-inch blade clears most loaves in a stroke or two, so you saw the length of the blade rather than forcing it through.

What else can it cut besides bread?

Anything with a firm skin and soft inside — tomatoes, crusty rolls, citrus, soft cake and pastry. The serrations grip skins a straight edge would slide off or crush.

How do I care for it?

Hand wash and dry it — it's not dishwasher safe. The red wood handle and 1.4116 blade last longest washed by hand. Store it so the teeth aren't knocking against other metal.
